Saturday, 10/28 12-3pm

Join Button Farm as we celebrate our annual Maryland Emancipation Day Event in commemoration of the day in 1864, when Maryland changed its constitution to abolish slavery six months before the end of the Civil War. The program features speakers, self-guided tours of the farm’s museum garden and animal pens.  Snacks and cider are provided!

This event is generously funded by the Montgomery County Commission on Remembrance and Reconciliation.

Keynote Talk

Presentation: “Nut Trees- Bread and Butter and Freedom”

Location: The Pavilion
Time: 12:30-1:30 pm

Join SilvoCulture’s Michael Judd as he speaks on our region's best-adapted tree crops and the establishment of a SilvoCulture food forest on the grounds of Button Farm. These tree crops are a perennial source of food that has fed people and wildlife for time immemorial and promises food security for generations to come.

Menare founder Anthony Cohen will follow Michael, sharing the relationship between these fascinating tree crops and The Underground Railroad, reading the accounts of self-liberators who relied on these food sources during enslavement and on their journeys to freedom.
